Friday Flashback: Kittens Thump Base, Again

The original recap of the highest-scoring Sea Kittens game ever, October 5, 2016.

The Harmony Sea Kittens (3-1 MSCR Winona League) established an all-time team record for runs scored in a 34-11 4-inning drubbing of Steal Your Base at Olbrich Park Wednesday night, sweeping the season series three games to zero after dropping both contests played against the Basers in 2015.

David “Zen Master” Rowe opened the game with a double off his arch-rival, SYB pitcher “Sherri.” (Unnecessary quotes added exclusively for G-bomb Hansen’s benefit).  After moving to third on a base hit from Jess “Spike” Schultz, Rowe scored the game’s first run on a Mercury Stevens groundout. Dan DynamOele brought home Stevens with a double to deep left, but the Kittens went otherwise quietly in taking a 2-0 advantage.  Buoyed by the defensive stand, SYB struck back with a run of its own, bringing palpable energy to the diamond when they retook the field for the top of the second, down only 2-1.

Taking in their first game, these two Sea Kitten fans found the contest a snoozer. But word is that Callie, on the left, stayed up and talked about the game until 3 AM, especially excited by her mom’s triple!

The Sea Kitten offense erupted.  Mags Magyera opened the top half of the frame with a knock to left, and trotted to third an out later when Sweet Thing Harkins drew a three-pitch walk.  It seemed innocuous enough, but thirteen of the next fifteen Sea Kitten batters hit safely, and when the Olbrich diamond dust settled, 14 Sea Kittens had crossed the plate and the scoreboard read 16-1 Kits.

The Basers plated one in the bottom of the inning, and then the Sea Kittens fired up the hit parade again.  Jazzy Leda Nath flared a run-scoring single to right, starting a string of eight consecutive two-out hits, followed by a walk and another hit. Harmony notched 11 more runs and extended its advantage to 27-2.  When catcher Taryn Davis crossed the plate in the third, every Sea Kitten had managed to score before the team made nine outs.

With the rout on, Rowe pitched to contact and Los Gatitos’ offense slowed its pace, but still managed to log seven more runs, while SYB found some small solace in posting crooked numbers on the scoreboard in the third and fourth innings.

Rowe, Stevens, Oele, Joe Hennessy, and first-time call-up Diana Guzmán Colón all logged four hits, Stevens and Hennessy combined for 15 runs batted in, and Mama Cat O’Brien swatted her first triple of 2016.  All told the Sea Kittens collected 34 runs on 37 hits; with an additional four bases on balls earned, the team had 41 runners reach safely in just four innings of play.  The 34 runs topped the high-water mark of 32 set in the 2016 summer league opener.

Game Notes:

  • The Kittens 37 hits was one shy of the record 38 collected May 8, 2016 against Beckett Tax & Accounting
  • Andy collected his 6th and 7th doubles, breaking Joe’s record of 5 in a fall season (2011)
  • Joe racked up 8 more runs batted in to move his total to 24 in four fall games, breaking Joe Litchfield’s fall record of 21 RBI, set in 2010
  • With two games to play, there’s quite a battle for the fall batting title- Joe sits at 0.933 (14-15), Dave at 0.900 (9-10) and Andy 0.875 (14-16). With Andy possibly having played his last game (depending on rain and/or playoffs), Dave and Joe have little margin for error.  The fall league record for batting average is 0.800, by Matt Kornis in 2011
  • On the women’s side, Karli 0.583 (7-12) and Jess 0.533 (8-15) are battling it out, and with two games to play, both are within striking distance of Erin’s fall record of 11 hits, set in 2010, and possibly her 0.600 batting average, established in 2013

Updated game notes, October 2025:

  • Andy remains one of only 5 players to score 5 runs in a game
  • Joe is one of only 5 players with 8 or more RBI in a game
  • It’s one of only three games where every batter in the Sea Kittens lineup had two or more hits
