Kittens Take Newspaper Across the Nose

Recap

July 14, 2010
The upstart Sea Kittens took a newspaper across the nose last night, falling 16-5 to South Side Badgers.  Overall it was a rough night for the Kits at the plate, in the field, and on the bases. The team stayed in the ballgame until the final 2.5 innings, when things really started to slip away.
There were still some shining moments deserving of Salmon Snacks:

Nick Legler, 3-3, 3 RBI and a fine game at SS
Jon Hansen 2-3, triple, 2 runs scored
Beth Monaco2-3 1 run scored and flawless first base
Joe Litchfield 2-3, 1 run, 1 RBI
Katherine Curtis, who was 1-3 with a very solid single over second, but also smoked a ball down the third base line with two outs and the bases loaded in the 3rd, only to see it snagged inched above the ground on a nice play that’s simply recoded “5” in the scorebook, but is burned in my mind as a ‘what might’ve been” moment of the game.
We get the Badgers again next week, in game 2 of our double-header. and I think we’ll be more ready for them!
Notes on the game:  in the field, we can do a better job of discussing who’s going to be cut-off for balls to various fields, who’s covering bases on grounders
On the bases, we can do a better job of both base-coaching and watching base coaches.  We missed a few chances to take an extra base, and tried to take a couple that we shouldn’t have.
‘Salright, it was still a really fun game, and even as we got nickle-and-dimed to defeat I still always thought we had a chance to rally.  We’ll get ’em next time, after we warm up on the Bombers, who’ll be a really solid opponent, too.
