Kittens Too Quick for Goons

Clutch hitting and solid pitching and defense carried the Sea Kittens to a 5-2 win over Goodman Goons last night, and the Kittens showed little signs of rust after a wet 3-week layoff. The Goons opened the game’s scoring with 2 runs in the bottom of the second and held the Kittens scoreless through 4 innings. Pitcher Matt Kornis put the clamps down on the Goons and kept the Kits in the game, setting the stage for a dramatic 5th-inning rally. Kornis and Erin O’brien led off the 5th with back-to-back singles, but Joe Hennessy and Stephani Pescitelli couldn’t advance the runners. Aaron Jossart stepped in with 2 out and lifted a single to left center, pulling the good guys within 1 run. A dramatic 4-pitch at-bat (the most pitches any single batter can see in an at-bat in this league 🙂 by Kristen Johnson ended with a walk that kept the rally alive. Jon Hansen stepped in with the bases loaded and ripped a clean single inside the third-base line, scoring 2 and giving the Kittens a 3-2 lead. A wild 6th, punctuated by a 2-out, 2-run rap to CF by Tom Cichosz, gave the Kits some breathing room, despite seeing a runner forced at second base on the play. Kornis continued his mastery of the Goons in the 6th, and the game timed out before the 7th could begin. Kornis allowed only 4 hits on the day and earned the CG win.   Salmon Snacks Aaron, Kristen, Jon, Tom for their outstanding, game-winning 2-out at-bats Pescitelli Sisters for their defensive plays of the game: Audrey’s quick grab of a foul tip and Stephani’s heads-up flip to second on a ground ball wide of first. Matt for a brilliant evening on the mound, in addition to having 2 hits in 2 at-bats Sea Kittens- for putting 12 runners on base and spreading hits throughout the batting order. Bad Kitties: …but we do get a collective tap on the nose for continuing our dreadful baserunning. I am sorry I started that habit- it seems to have spread! Might have to go over the basics (of running and base-coaching) before the next game. 😉 Next week: 6:30 – our rematch with Players! Field 1 (other end of the park) Tom & Kristen are out. Anyone else?
