Recap
The Sea Kittens were back in action Wednesday night, after rain led to a 2-week hiatus from the diamond. Despite the gap, the Kittens showed no rust and played livelier ball than in their season-opening loss to Pedro’s, but couldn’t string enough hits together to avert a 5-2 loss to Player’s. After falling behind 1-0, the Kittens staged a second-inning rally and had a run home, the bases loaded and nobody out, but couldn’t scratch out another run. A string of hits and walks in the second plated 2 runs for Player’s, giving them a 3-1 lead they wouldn’t relinquish, though solid SK defense kept the game close to the finish.
Birthday batter Jon Hansen marked his 2011 debut with a double and run scored, while Seahorse Cichosz and Dave Rowe had 2 hits apiece for the Kittens. Matt Kornis was a late scratch at starting pitcher, so Joe Hennessy was pushed into the role for the first time in 2011. Hennessy struggled with control at times but got through a few jams with little damage, thanks to solid fielding by the Seahorse, Kristen Johnson at second base, and Rowe at SS, who had two run-saving plays. Hennessy also combined with Erin O’Brien on a nifty play at first base to nip a late Player’s scoring threat.

June 1 Salmon Snacks:

Sonya Rowe- 1-3, 1 RBI. Her RBI single in the second extended her hitting streak to 2 games, and she is the only Sea Kitten woman with a hit in both games
Jon Hansen- turned 30 and doubled
Dave Rowe- 2-3, and made a slick grab of a line drive just above the grass in the fifth, and managed not to collide with Hansen on a pop to left-center, in two of the day’s top defensive moments
Kristen Johnson- flawless play at her 2011 debut at second base
