Recap
It wasn’t the summer-league champion Bombers who trotted into the field against the Kittens Thursday night, but a different Bombers squad who were disarmed by a relentless Sea Kittens outfit. The Bombers were fresh off a 5-4 win over Bare Tree Bears, but found themselves down to the underwater cats 3-0 after the first inning. After exchanging 6-spots in the second, the Kits ambushed the Bombers and trotted off with a 30-7, 5-inning win. Celebrating his recent 30th birthday and engagement, Joe Litchfield provided both spark and boom with a bases-loaded triple in the second and an over-the-fence grand slam in the Kittens’ 12-run 4th. The Kittens has 15 consecutive runners reach base safely in that inning. Holy meow!
Salmon snacks all around for the hitters, but Tom Cichosz (5-5, walk), Erin O’Brien (6-6) and Matt Kornis (4-4, walk) were three Kits who did not make an out. A sometimes over-exuberant defense was the only rust the Kittens showed, but Kristen Johnson made a sweet play at home plate to force (and tag!) out a would-be Bombers scorer.
Salmon snacks and belly-rubs to Julie Smith and Amy Staffen, two Mighty Oaks who came to the Kits rescue and filled in tonight. After playing volleyball earlier in the evening, they shifted to softball gear and made great contributions with their gloves (Julie with the assist at home plate) and bats, scoring 6 runs and knocking in 5 while getting on base 7 times. Not to mention that without them it would have been a forfeit loss!
30 runs, 31 hits, and 7 walks are all Sea Kittens records.
Erin’s 6 hits; Erin, Tom & Matt’s 6 times on base; and Litch’s 8 RBI are also team records. Kristen and Amy tied the record of 2 walks in a game.
