For the third consecutive week, Sea Kittens (3-1-1) jumped to an early lead and cruised to victory in Madison Sport & Social Club Thursday night Fall League play, this time sailing past The Hitmen in a 14-3 victory. Kittens outfielder All Day Kendra Haight and shortstop Dan DynamOele led the Cats’ attack with 4 hits apiece and Sea Kitten defense turned two double plays behind starting pitcher Joe Hennessy in one of the Cats’ crispest games in recent memory.
Sea Kittens opened the game on defense and made quick work of The Hitmen in a 1-2-3 inning highlighted by Jami “Roadrunner” Hauer’s stop of a hot one-hopper to her glove-hand side at second base on the first pitch of the game. Upon returning to the bench to take their first turn on offense, Alex “Puma” Latzka provided some first-batter juice, legging out an inside-the-park home run to open the game and give the Cats a 1-0 lead. Two outs later, Oele banged a double off the left-field fence to put runners on second & third and after Haight followed with a run-scoring single Hennessy smoked a triple to left-center to put Sea Kittens up 4-0.
DynamOele’s third career grand slam puts the Cats up 10-0 in the 2nd inning.
After another quick inning of defense the Cats got back to work on offense but a nice play in right-center on a hard line drive off Latzka’s bat left Sea Kittens with runners on first and second and two out. But Emalie Thern knocked home a run with a two-out hit and David “The Ringer” Engeldinger followed with another one to put Los Gatitos ahead 6-0. Hauer singled to load the bases and then DynamOele delivered the big blow of the game, blasting a no-doubt grand slam to left centerfield to give Sea Kittens a 10-0 advantage.
After trading zeroes in a quick third inning, The Hitmen battled back with three runs in the top of the fourth, but once again the Cats made two-out magic, ripping off four consecutive two-out hits to add two more runs to their tally. It was also in the bottom of the fourth that The Hitmen lost their left-fielder on a non-contact injury, rolling his ankle on the damp outfield grass. With Hitmen down to 9 player, Sea Kittens provided a defensive catcher… Thern, who promptly threw out Mama Cat O’Brien to end the inning.
The game moved along briskly from there, with the Sea Kitten defense posting zeroes through the finish- including one behind rookie Braden “Gas” Furness, who made his career pitching debut in the seventh, while the Cats’ offense tacking on two more in the 6th to seal the 14-3 win.
