Pronounced “Fur-NESS” and there’s no “NO” in “Braden,” but to the Sea Kittens he’s simply “Gas.”
The youngest of the Cats is still drying his fur in this, his first year of rec league softball play, but has taken to the game like a kitten to milk. Swinging the bat with more confidence and authority as 2025 progresses, Furness is proving to be a reliable contributor and adds much-needed youth to the squad. Born in Georgia but raised in Iowa, Gas caught the baseball/softball bug as a youngster playing tee ball, and played through his high school days in Iowa, never realizing his true Field of Dreams would be on Fish Hatchery Road in Madison, Wisconsin.
Already hanging around Sea Kitten manager Joe Hennessy far too much- sitting in the same aisle at work, bowling together through winter, rumors are swirling that the impressionable youngster has been listening to the captain’s offers to teach him the Dark Art of slowpitch pitching. But when Furness says things like “sometimes the hour of game time just goes too fast,” one knows he’s caught the bug, even if the Bowman infield sometimes threatens his face with bad hops at shortstop.
And let it be known he chose his own hype/ walkup song.
