Laura “Red Shoes Hewitt” debuted with Sea Kittens August 26, 2012, playing in the team’s one-and-done Harmony Tournament appearance that year. A long time member of the Echo Tap Mighty Oaks Softball Collective, Hewitt signed a free-agent contract with the Harmony side in late May, 2013, stepping in when pre-natal Wilhelmina Hansen got a little too big for G-bomb Hansen to carry around the bases. Hewitt has since been a regular on the right side of the diamond, splitting time between catcher, second base, and right field. While she says her favorite position is a toss-up between catcher and second base, she lists her favorite Sea Kittens memories as “some fun and (unlikely for me) outfield catches,” including one memorable one in left field at Warner Park that was a particular stand-out.

Red Shoes established career-bests in RBI (4) and runs scored in Summer 2018 (5), and while not the fastest of the Sea Kittens, she has demonstrated panache and veteran savvy on the basepaths time and again this season. Perhaps it’s- no, it’s decidedly thanks to the power and confidence bestowed upon the wearer of the snazzy red cleats that lend her nickname. Red shoes keep on runnin’.

Hewitt is also a Harmony Tournament standout, having posted a 0.392 batting average in her last 28 Tournament at-bats, nearly 0.150 higher than her summer league mark.

Most annoying thing on the softball diamond: mosquitos

Fun fact: Red Shoes never immediately precedes The Puma in the batting order. 😉
