Rabbit to Run with Kittens

Sea Kitten original Boom Boom Magyera (R) was instrumental in luring free agent slugger Helen Bradley (L) to the Harmony Side. The two are seen here during an off-season workout. Management is hopeful the high-profile free agent signing will boost attendance, as casual fans like Katie Mags (C) and Grant Bradley may appear at games more frequently.

On the heels of the high-profile signings of Manny Machado, Bryce Harper, and Nolan Arenado, Harmony Sea Kittens reached a contract agreement with Helen “Boo Rabbit” Bradley to join the club full-time in 2019. The multi-talented lefty has contributed two solid fall seasons for the Cats in 2017 and 2018, and her age and softball pedigree project favorably.

The deal is believed to be structured similarly to other Sea Kitten deals: unlimited duration with a player opt-out after every season. Financials, consistent with club policy, were not disclosed.

“It’s a great fit for player and club,” Sea Kitten general manager Seamour Sea Kitten gushed. “Reinforcing the summer roster with a known talent like Helen Bradley was an opportunity we just couldn’t afford to botch, and I think the promise of a gluten-free yet still satisfying, refreshing, and potentially mildly intoxicating softball experience appealed to Helen. Sea Kittens have a solid track record in providing a welcoming softball environment. We certainly weren’t hesitant to offer her a contract to play with Sea Kittens for the remainder of her life.”

With six extra-base hits under her belt in just 13 Sea Kitten games, Bradley has already moved to #2 on the all-time list for extra-base hits among Sea Kitten women, and although the sample size is small, her rate of one extra-base hit per 6.7 at-bats is a tick ahead of all-time leader Erin “Mama Cat” O’Brien’s rate of one per 10.0 at-bats (42 in 422 career at-bats in MSCR league play). In her rookie fall season, Bradley swatted an inside-the-park homer, joining Gretchen Hansen as the only Sea Kitten women to homer in a game; in 2018 she joined O’Brien and Hansen as the only women to notch two or more triples in a season, accomplishing the feat in a mere 14 at-bats. Scouts are confident that Bradley’s power will play in summer league and may develop further within the longer summer season.

“What the hell is a Boo Rabbit?”

Some scouts

As always, a handful of evaluators have questions, foremost of which is, “what the hell is a Boo Rabbit?” The details of Bradley’s dash home from first base just ahead of the Polish Puma, Alex Latzka when he delivered a walk-off two-run, inside-the-park home run to carry the Cats past Affordable Quality HVAC September 6, 2017 are well-chronicled. Boo Radley is also well-chronicled, and Bradley rhymes with Radley. And the whole thing has a nice ring to it: “Boo Rabbit!!!” In the way Will Farrell shouting “You’re my boy, Blue!” has a nice ring to it. Bradley, a Leo, identifies with the strength, assertiveness and personal power the lion represents; likewise, bearing the Boo Rabbit moniker with pride requires an immense amount of personal confidence and/or lack of shame.

In a glimpse of the enthusiasm Bradley brings to the diamond, she was heard shouting “I’m in!!!” when she received her summer contract offer and was the first player to enroll for the 2019 campaign. She also may have designs on orchestrating Sea Kitten extracurricular outings; when she asks, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to say “no.”

  1. I’ll be your “boo rabbit”. Good luck. Steal a sign, steal a base, slide head first but no scratching. Leave that to the guys.
