Sea Kittens Ready to Pounce on Fall Ball

Sea Kittens host BSG in 2018 MSCR Castle Rock Fall League opener tonight.  Sea Kittens are coming off a summer league championship while BSG finished runners-up (by virtue of forfeit) in its summer league season at Goodman Park, but the records are now re-set and play begins anew! . 8:15 PM Olbrich Park, Field 1

Cats Climb League Ladder

Fresh off a Summer League Championship, the fall season will mark the first time Sea Kittens will compete in the upper level of two available Wednesday night Olbrich Park divisions since going 0-5 in the 2013 Winnebago League- games two through six in The Schneid.  The competition looks solid on paper, with two runners-up from their respective summer leagues- I’d Hit That (11-1) and BSG (8-3), in addition to the Monroe League champion Kittens (10-1).  Two other teams are relative unknowns- Great Dane fielded a 10-0 men’s league team during summer, and a men’s version of Wilson’s Coolers was 7-3.  From the Wednesday Olbrich summer Kenosha “A” League comes Kendra “All-Day” Haight’s Glove Love (3-7).  Rounding out the Castle Rock League are fall league regulars Annihilation in Flight,  and a Chief’s Tavern team led by Kristina Capacio, who fielded a 10-0 Silver Eagle squad in the Kenosha League.  It’s unknown if Capacio’s Chief’s & Silver Eagle rosters have significant overlap.  The Cats have previously faced Chief’s, Annihilation in Flight, Glove Love and I’d Hit That, and are 1-4 all-time against those squads, but have not faced any since August, 2014. With the league’s unbalanced 5-game schedule in an 8-team league, Harmony is not scheduled to face I’d Hit That or Glove Love. While the Harmony Crew has enjoyed tremendous success during autumn ball the past two seasons- finishing 5-1 and in an unresolved 3-way tie for first in 2016 and 6-1 and league runners-up in 2017, the team has historically struggled in the late-season league and holds a 21-24 all-time fall league record.  In top-level leagues the club is 6-15 all-time, but has not played at that level since Fall, 2013.

Familiar Faces Round Out Fall Roster

Sea Kittens enter the Fall 2018 Castle Rock League with a larger-than-usual roster that features 11 holdovers from the Summer League champions plus three familiar faces from Sea Kittens teams past.  It’s the first roster devoid of a rookie that Cats have posted since their 2010 inception.  With eight men and six women, manager Joe Hennessy will have some scrambling to do to achieve balanced lineups, and the Kittens will likely lean on appearances from Heidibadger Nelson, Red Shoes Hewitt, and Karlin “Clutch” Younger- cleared to bat after a  summer season lost to a shoulder injury- to complete the lineup. Joining the club for fall ball for the first time since 2012 are KC “Ropes” Curtis and Man-Aaron Jossart, both of whom played more summer ball in 2018 than they had since 2013.  Perhaps their absence for the diamond made their hearts grow even fonder for Los Gatitos del Mar.   Flash Marsicek and Boo Rabbit Bradley return for fall ball after a summer season with Bottomfeeders Softball Club, and look to reprise their successful Fall 2017 Sea Kitten rookie campaigns.  Also returning is all-star outfielder Mercury Stevens , who toiled thanklessly in northern Wisconsin’s pinecone leagues the past two summers after a blistering 2016 rookie season with the Cats in which he batted 0.800 and collected 48 hits, 21 doubles, and 46 RBI in 15 games between summer and fall leagues.  In only 17 career games with Harmony, Stevens finds himself in a tie for 5th on the career doubles leaders’ list. It’s going to be a beautiful night for softball- come out and Get Smitten With the Kitten!
