Sea Kittens Softball returns for its 14th season tonight in a 7:30 PM Madison Sport & Social Club matchup with Hot Pitches at Bowman Park. All these years later, at least one truism remains: one can never know what to expect on any given play, in any given game, or through any given Sea Kittens season, and that’s what keeps the magic alive.
Familiar foe Hot Pitches awaits the Cats, and while Los Gatitos del Mar sport an unblemished 6-0 record against Logan’s club, the Pitches sported a new-look lineup in a 14-12 victory over Bottomfeeders last night. The Wednesday-Thursday Hot Pitches squads have eight players in common as do Bottomfeeders and Sea Kittens, so the matchup looks to be a good one.
In the absence of staff ace David “Zen Master” Rowe, Sea Kittens co-founder Joe Hennessy will make his fourth career Opening Day start, but first since 2016. The Cats have won each of Hennessy’s previous Game One starts, have an all-time 3-0 record in April games, and bring a 5-year Opening Day winning streak into tonight’s contest and will be looking to keep those streaks alive. All-time Sea Kittens are 9-4 in their first-games-of-the-year.
The game will have extra sparkle for Katie “Sunshine” Curtis. The Professor of Goat-Roping and Mistress of Mayhem is one of three remaining Sea Kittens from the 2010 first-day roster and tonight she’ll become the 10th person to appear in 100 or more Sea Kittens games.
