The Return of the Kitten

Six hundred and three days have passed since Sea Kittens last walked off the diamond, defeated that night 12-5 by Wilson’s Coolers. The Covid-19 pandemic scuttled the entirety of the Kittens’ 2020 season, along with a whole lot more, but the Kitten family hunkered down, remained healthy, and learned to embrace uncertainty, kinda like they do when they enter the 7th inning with an 8-run lead. Every Kitten who played that night is at a minimum 20 months older; some may have aged more than that; but all but three are ready to go for the recently-announced 2021 season, save Jessica Schultzy Oele (hominid parasite), Helen “Boo Rabbit” Bradley (PUP list- undisclosed), and Bradley “Sweet Thing” Harkins (Lisfranc injury; well, maybe it’s that? “Lisfranc” just sounds cooler than “tender paw”). These three are on the physically-unable-to-perform list for summer 2021 but remain under contract.
The Zen Master, dialed in vs. Eagles in 2018 title game.
In their stead Sea Kittens have re-signed Zoe “Z-Force” Slattery and added rookie Kristin Brown, who’ll make her Sea Kitten debut tonight. It’s been 603 days since the team last played together and 617 days since the Cats last won a game; for perspective, only 363 days passed between Sea Kitten wins during The Schneid, even though that felt like a similar eternity. But Los Gatitos will romp onto the red dirt of Olbrich Field #4 tonight ready to play, win or lose, fun at any cost. Across the diamond will be Eagles, whom the Cats last saw in the 2018 Summer Monroe League Championship, an 18-10 Sea Kitten triumph.

Sea Kittens 2021 Roster

by order of Sea Kitten debut, stats for MSCR league games only; the individual player pages are all messed up on the website 🙁
  • Erin “Mama Cat” O’Brien– 2010; 138 games, nine hits away from career hit #200, and one RBI short of #100
  • Joe “Coffeecat” Hennessy– debut 2010; 147 career games played. Leader (by volume) in many Sea Kitten batting categories. He is also gong to try a nickname this year, for the first time in his career.
  • Katherine “Sunshine” Curtis– 2010; 62 games, 6-time winner of the L’Esprit de Chatons de la Mer Award. Has bumped her career batting average up by nearly 100 points over the past 3 seasons.
  • Kyle “Boom Boom” Magyera– 2010; 102 games, nine runs short of 100. Magyera has hit 6 of his 9 career home runs in his last 27 games played.
  • Man-Aaron Jossart– 2010; 58 games, 8 hits shy of #100. Sea Kitten Poet Laureate.
  • David “Zen Master” Rowe– 2011; 119 games, #3 on all-time list. Recovering from off-season surgery but slated to be ready for opener. Has been opening day pitcher 4 times, most in Sea Kitten history, and has 17 career doubles when slotted 1st in the batting order.
  • Laura “Red Shoes” Hewitt– 2012; 57 games. The Red Shoes shine in the summertime only; to date Hewitt is the only Sea Kitten free agent signed away from another team, having previously played for Echo Tap Mighty Oaks. An L’Esprit de Chatons de la Mer winner and a fan favorite when the red wheels really get turning.
  • Dan Dynam-Oele– 2014; 85 games. Joined Sea Kittens after fellow Michigan native Detroit Josh Ghena returned to The Mitten. Oele has bashed 29 home runs in 299 plate appearances. He’s 1 hit shy of #200, and 1 extra-base hit shy of #100. All-time team leader in slugging percentage.
  • Alex “Polish Puma” Latzka– 2014; 42 games. Made single-game appearances in both 2014 & 2015, and two in 2016 before landing a permanent roster spot in Fall, 2017. One of only two Kits with 10 or more career doubles, triples, and home runs, and accomplished the feat in only 34 games.
  • Jami “Roadrunner” Hauer– 2016; 38 games. The fastest female Sea Kitten, ever, and one of four Sea Kitten women to boast a career batting average (0.419) north of 0.400. Had started to spray hits to right field before pandemic interruption, a most dangerous skill in a player with her speed.
  • Zoe “Z-Force” Slattery-2019; 4 games. Played part-time for the Cats in 2019, collecting 5 hits in 13 at-bats while scoring three runs. Timed her shoulder injury & recover to coincide with pandemic, which was smart.
  • Kristin (TBA) Brown– SK Rookie. A late roster addition after the loss of the Boo Rabbit, Brown was recruited and signed form the Kittens Madison East affiliate, which also produced Jossart and Slattery. Brown played some HS ball and summer leagues in early 2000s; her layoff between playing is consistent with most on the roster.
