The Running of The Kristen

Beloved Sea Kitten veteran Kristen “KJ” Johnson. One of the original Sea Kittens, Johnson played 70 games with the Kittens between 2010-2015. A complete newcomer to softball when she began, KJ went 8 games before recording her first hit- a thrilling moment for the entire team. KJ practiced tirelessly, and went on to post a career-best 0.409 on-base percentage in 2013 and .304 batting average in 2014. She is #2 all-time in drawing bases on balls, and #6 on the all-time games played list.
September 12, 2012 Magnetic Monopoles 13, Sea Kittens 11
‘Twas a fall-league game vs. arch-friendly rivals Magnetic Monopoles- before they became Infield Flies (or even Baltimore Factorioles), and before there was a Can O’Corn Trophy at stake.
The scene: Joe was on first, Kristen on second. Jon at bat.
Jon doubled to left-center, and Joe decided he would score from first- but in order to do so, Kristen must get there first. Joe caught her by the time they got to third, but she ran for her life towards the plate, Joe just behind. The sound and the moment were unforgettable- the relay throw snapping into the catcher’s mitt just before Kristen and Joe reach the plate. A pause… and emphatically, the umpire cried “TWO OUT!”
Spectacularly, the same trio repeated the scene a week later. Thankfully, that time Jon chased Joe & Kristen home and the trio reached safely just ahead of the throw.
The Monopoles write-up was done in a series of 10 haiku:

Poles Top Cats

Monopoles scored first Jon! G! Kyle! Dave! Heidi! Josh! Kittens score four runs A couple of errors The visitors scored three more Bottom second, tied Kristen walks, Joe hits Jon drives one deep to left field! Thunk. Step, step. Two outs. Game notes:

  • Gretchen’s homer was the first by one of the Sea Kitten’s women
  • Kits dropped to 0-2 vs. Monopoles, losing by a total of 3 runs
  • Next week’s game is @ 8 PM vs. Annihilation in Flight- our last softball game of 2012 <sad face>
Salmon snacks:
  • Joe and Gretchen really like Baton Rouge… and so offer it salmon snacks as homage
  • Jon 4-4 in the leadoff spot, 2B, 3B, 2 RS, 2 RBI
  • Gretchen and Josh for the big hits!
  • Hadley for bringing cookies.
  • Bad Hadley for apparently loading said cookies with goofy juice.
  • Heidi for a fine slide into third. Definitely deserved better for that one.
  • Kristen for her mad hustle to the plate with some knucklehead chasing her.
